Fracture Integrated Reliability Engineering

The FIRE Group, led by Dr. Md Rushdie Ibne Islam in the Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture at IIT Kharagpur, works broadly in computational mechanics for fracture, impact, and reliability. We develop advance smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH)–based methods to model fluid–structure interaction, dynamic fracture, hydrodynamic impact, and multiscale material behavior. Our research combines physics-based simulation with gray-box modeling, uncertainty quantification, and data-driven approaches to improve prediction and reliability in complex marine and coastal systems. Although primarily computational, we collaborate closely with experts in experiments, materials, and marine engineering.
